In today's science lesson, students learned about melting, about the solid and liquid states of matter, and then discovered why plastic was invented. In the activity, Candy Melt, students conducted an investigation to determine which types of candy melt in hot water. Using their observations, they decided which candy is the best choice to bring to a hot summer camp. Students experimented with chocolate, jelly beans, starburst, and gummy bears!

Today, during science, students considered the insulating and conducting properties of different materials. In the activity, Feel the Heat, students tested different materials and determined which would make the best oven mitts. We will continue to study and explore material properties!

Today, we had our second Discovery Museum traveling workshop on Force and Motion. Students dove into various forces such as push, pull, and gravity with hands-on activities. They also got to design a push/pull toy at the end! Thank you to the Downey PTO for sponsoring this enrichment!

We started a new science unit on material properties! In the first lesson, students explores the different properties of materials used for clothing, such as texture, flexibility, and absorbency. In the activity, Mad Hatter, students used the information they learned to design and build a hat that protects them from the Sun.

To wrap up our economics unit, students created businesses that offered goods and services. Students also got to shop at each other's business with pretend money! During this unit, students learned important terms such as needs vs wants, goods vs services, and consumers vs producers!

This morning, we had our first Discovery Museum traveling workshop of the year! 2nd grader students investigated the physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases. We used dry ice and liquid nitrogen to learn and experiment with the phase changes as together we changed liquid water to gas, shattered flowers, and even used a banana as a hammer! Changes of matter is part of the second grade curriculum and we are so thankful to the Downey PTO for sponsoring this event!

We continue to study erosion! For today's science experiment, we used cornmeal to make models of land. We tested whether water is powerful enough to create canyons! Ask your 2nd grader about it!

We started a new science unit on erosion and earth's surfaces. One the first 2 part lesson, we made models of land. We learned that rivers start and end at many different places all over the world, but they all have something in common: they start at high places, and end at low places. During our next science lesson, we are going to explore why there is sand at the beach!

During math, we have been learning about rectangular arrays! We are practicing identifying the rows, columns, and areas of rectangles. Today, each cluster was given an area (16, 18, 24, and 36) and they had to design as many rectangles as possible with that area.

Today Mrs. Kress introduced tangrams in Osmos! It ties well with our geometry unit!
